The Smell of Oppression

Sunday I walked out of my door and was greeted by the most awful stench. Not the normal city smell of garbage and pollution, but it was more of a stale musty smell as if Detroit was in desperate need of a bath. I shook it off thinking "Man this city stinks literally" and got in my car and drove to work laughing at the little joke I made. I grabbed a newspaper from the girl selling them on the corner on the way for my dad, who is currently working in Afghanistan and has no way to get a local paper, so that I could send it to him. Since I had tons of time on my hands (we get next to no business for hours on Sundays at my job) I decided to take a look at the paper. I don't want it to seem as if I detest reading the paper but it seems as if everytime you open it there's never anything positive. I'm not saying that the good things about Detroit never get printed but it does seem as if the negative makes the headlines, which probably says something about us as a city but I'm not sure what yet. Every issue seems to get more and more like the tabloids with constant coverage of our city's scandals and downfalls. It makes it very hard to see the silver lining when the black and white tells you that there isn't one. But fortunately I, like many other of our cities residents, have mastered the art of making myself numb to the negativity.
But not this week. This week I allowed all of my built up emotions over ride my brick wall that I was trying to build. I may seem a bit over emotional but that's what happens when you love your city and you have to watch it fail. It's like loving someone knowing everyday that you will probably have to leave them. It's a sad feeling sometimes. So I look at the front page and I read in big bold letters, "It's ok,mommy...don't cry" and there's this picture of a woman hugging her little boy. I stared at the picture for awhile, all the time halfway listening to my co-worker talk about someone's wedding. I tried hard to show that I was paying attention by chiming in with a "yeah", "no way", or "I hear ya' " every now and then at the appropriate times as I read the article. There were stories about various families who have become victims of  Detroit's economic crisis, all of whom never knew where their next meal was coming from. A father who sacrificed eating a good meal for his children, a mother who had no choice but to depend on the free lunch and breakfast programs to feed her son, parents who had to figure out how to tell their young children that there would be no Christmas. How do you tell a 5 year old that Santa was affected by the recession? I'm sure that's a confusing bed time story.
These stories moved me. I looked at my medium coffee and breakfast sandwich from Dunkin Donuts and felt sick. My hunger suddenly disappeared knowing that some little kid would love the luxury of being able to grab a quick morning breakfast, but the thought of wasting food when there were so many hungry out there made it return quickly. I gobbled down my breakfast appreciating every bite as I never had before. I felt guilty for having enough as if I didn't deserve to eat until I was satisfied anymore. I threw the remains of my crime in the garbage and covered it with a paper towel as if to hide the evidence of my greed.
By the time I finished the article I was grief-stricken. I had never really thought about how scarce food was for other people and I thought about the many ways I had taken food for granted.  It was then that I realized that the stench I smelled that morning was the smell of an oppressed city full of people filled with hopelessness. And I decided that I couldn't be numb anymore. I couldn't just pretend that it wasn't happening just because it wasn't directly affecting me. I decided that I had to do something and soon. But what?
My first step is this blog post.
I want people to understand how serious this hunger issue is.
Here are some statistics from soundvision.com:
-According to the Bread for the World Institute 3.5 percent of U.S. households experience hunger. Some people in these households frequently skip meals or eat too little, sometimes going without food for a whole day. 9.6 million people, including 3 million children, live in these homes.
-America's Second Harvest (http://www.secondharvest.org/), the nation's largest network of food banks, reports that 23.3 million people turned to the agencies they serve in 2001, an increase of over 2 million since 1997. Forty percent were from working families.
33 million Americans continue to live in households that did not have an adequate supply of food. Nearly one-third of these households contain adults or children who went hungry at some point in 2000
-According to America’s Second Harvest, over 41 billion pounds of food have been wasted this year.
-According to a 2004 study from the University of Arizona (UA) in Tucson, on average, American households waste 14 percent of their food purchases.
Fifteen percent of that includes products still within their expiration date but never opened. Timothy Jones, an anthropologist at the UA Bureau of Applied Research in Anthropology who led the study, estimates an average family of four currently tosses out $590 per year, just in meat, fruits, vegetables and grain products.
Nationwide, Jones says, household food waste alone adds up to $43 billion, making it a serious economic problem.
- Official surveys indicate that every year more than 350 billion pounds of edible food is available for human consumption in the United States. Of that total, nearly 100 billion pounds - including fresh vegetables, fruits, milk, and grain products - are lost to waste by retailers, restaurants, and consumers.

Isn't that bad?

So here's how to help...

First thing is to absolutely make sure that you cut down on food waste. Think about hungry children every time you are about to.

Here's a list of website sthat you can go to if you want to go a step further and donate time or money.

Celebrity Infidelities

So Tiger Woods has rocked the media for the past few weeks with the news of his car crash due to infidelity, rumors of a baby out of wedlock, and him leaving golf indefinetly because he needs to be with his family. Yes he has rocked it for sure, so much so that he has inspired my newest blog post. But I don't want to talk so much about Tiger Woods as an individual but more about male celebrities as a whole.
What is it that makes a man think that just because he makes millions that he has the right or the privelege to cheat on his wife? And what is it that makes a woman think that money is a good enough reason to forgive a man for his infidelities?
Is it true what they say? Can money really buy happiness? I'm not sure. I mean I am a woman who loves money but think about this. When your man is famous that makes you semi-famous. So that means everywhere you go you will be known as the dummy who stayed with him. And I'm not saying that if a woman goes back to her man after he has cheated then she is a dummy. What I am saying is that this world is full of nay sayers.
People who are always talking about what they would have done if it was them, the ones who always have the perfect response to a situation that they have never been in. So you have to be prepared for that as a woman. You also have to be prepared to be that woman that every cehating lying dog of a man will use as an example when he comes home with some sorry gift and an excuse for why he cheated. I don't think man ever think about the fact that the media makes a heart break even worse. I mean look at Kate Gosselin, I guarantee if Jon wasn't all in the media talking about how she abused him and making a fool out of him her and tehir basketball team of children, she would have stayed. My conclusion...if you are a celebrity you better either not have a relationship or make sure that you keep everything(and that includes your penis) under wraps!

Skinny Jeans : A Not So New Trend

I remember when I was younger about once very year my mother and I would go through her large clothes collection and weed out the things that she had finally decided were definetly out of date, couldn't fit her, or just weren't her style. This was a wonderful time for me because I would then sort through her piles take the rejects and make my own piles. Being the fashionista that I am one pile would be things that I thought were so cute my mother had to be crazy to let go, things that I could cut up and reconstruct to be something totally new, and the absolutely hideous things that I can't believe my mother ever wore and I was so glad that she was giving away-this pile ususally ended up at Salvation Army or donated to some sort of charitable clothing drive. Amongst these piles some time in the late 90's I remember seeing my mother's skinny jeans tossing them to the side thinking it was another fad and would never come back much like the shoulder pad. My mother would say, " You should keep them, everything goes in a big circle there's nothing new.".
It's amazing how many times in life as I grow up and had one of those moments when I realized that the things I thought my parents were absolutely crazy for saying when I was younger come true when I get older. I think about moments like these everytime I slide myself into my skinny jeans, throw on some bangles, and decorate myself with neon make-up and glitter. I look at todays music videos and think " so this is what it looked like back in the day".

So how is it that some people are so shocked and even disgusted by young males wearing skinny jeans? Aren't they just copying the style of men in the 80's who wore straight leg Levi's as they perfected their break dance moves?

Even the founder's of hip-hop Run DMC used to wear skinny jeans and Adidas back in the day? So why is it that now wearing skinny jeans for a male raises unneccesary questions about sexuality?

Come on guys baggy jeans can't last forever. I can't believe rappers such as Jay-Z have actually went as far as to criticize the New Boyz for wearing skinny jeans. Come on they're just kids doing something different.
I'm glad that they are confident enough to go against the grain and try something new. Besides I think skinny jeans are cool and a part of true hip hop.

Monogamy of the Black Man

Okay so we have heard all about the Tiger Woods infidelity scandal. I'm not going to go to much into that. If you wanna hear about that its all over the blog-o-sphere. What I want to talk about is a comment that I heard the other day related to this issue. I'm not sure what radio station I was listening to during my daily commute but they were taking callers and this one young lady called in and said that she wasn't suprised to find out that Tiger cheated because he was a black man and that black men are incapable of being monagomous. I am shaking my head as I read this.
When will we stop making excuses like this?
If we all remember Tiger Woods never identified himself as a black man. He was canablanasian or some Harry Potter type species. When he won the PGA tour we didn't say that he won because African American males have greater athletic ability than any others and thats why he won. No he won because he was a great athletic male period!
Besides...to make statements like that woul mean that only black celebrities cheat. Hmmm....so I guess we forgot about David Letterman and his secretary, Josh Duhamel and a stripper, Jude Law and his nanny, and the infamous Bill Clinton scandal(wait you guys consider the last one to be black).
What I am saying is this....every time a black man does something negative it is not because he is a black man. That is another cope out excuse. There are plenty of good black men in this world who don't cheat. I'm proud to say that I have one. And if you are a woman who can't seem to find a good man maybe it's because you aren't a good woman.

Just a bunch of random thoughts caused by overdosing on the media and chaos in Detroit

This morning while I was on my way to work listening to some talk radio my brain began to slowly swell and I felt a headache coming on. And then I thought about it, everytime I am listening to talk radio this same things happen. I have concluded that I am overdosing on media. Yes people anything is bad for you if you don't take it in moderation. I admit it...I am a media junkie. So I decided to take an entire week without all the tv,radio,blogs,magazines,etc...Yeah so that was too hard so here, you are a witness to my relapse.

Okay so first thing.

Now I have to admit lately I haven't been such a fan of 50 Cent's music lately. I mean I always will respect him as a business man but I don't know something about his music just hasn't been reaching me lately. It's funny how quickly things change because after hearing his recently released album , Before I Self Destruct, I have jumped back on the 50 Cent train. It's not just the fact that it reminded me so much of his first cd, back when his lyrics were gritty, rugged, and screaming of the streets, but it was also the fact that you got two movies came with it. He comes hard again with his killer hooks, and brings back some of his most famous catch phrases. For the past two days evey five seconds one of my favorite tracks would play over and over again" Have a baby by me baby, be a millionare". There was one that had the same title as the cd which was a dramatic portrayl of a young street ball player turned assasin (50 cent) and his demise. The other was a documentary about the life and death of hip hop legend Jam Master Jay. It raises dangerous questions about who really killed him and what people who were there that night know that they aren't saying. I don't want to give you too much detail about either of these movies because they are both a must see!!!

As I mentioned before I was listening to talk radio on the way to work, which partially caused my media overdose, and the topic was Chris Brown and Rihanna once again. I thought the situation had pretty much died down until the interviews on Good Morning America and MTV, so here we go again down the yellow brick road. Well I was kind of upset because once again there were women on air live defending Chris once again and trying to make Rihanna seem like the villian. It's sad. People need to realize how serious an issue domestic violence is and if we keep victimizing the assailants then we condone this violence. Be more aware of what your opiniions really say about yourself. If a woman can't confront a man about his wrong doings without him getting physically violent than he is not a man. Bottom line.

And while we are on the subject of violence I want to end this note on a serious tip. There is a serious crime wave going on in this world but it's hitting closer to home in my hometown of Detroit. In the last month three women have come up missing, one found dead, there were two murder suicides, and a father made his 15 year old son strip naked in the middle of the street and then shot him execution style. There is a serious problem going on and no one seems to know how to solve it. Some people say we just all need to love each other but mankind is obviously incapable of doing that. Some people say it's rap music and the media that causes this violence but that's just another cope out. I think it's the lack of respect for the law and God's most precious creation. If police would become protectors instead of enforcers and if people understood the value of life then maybe this world would have a chance.  Respect eachother. Realize that a human life is more precious than your reputation or any material thing.

Jail is the new black

Yesterday as I was browsing through my favorite web pages, after I read about Katt Williams being jailed for burgulary charges I came across an article about Gucci Mane being in jail again. Yes that's right rapper Gucci Mane whose real name is Roderick Davis was taken into custody after a parole violation.  The rapper who is thought to be at the peak of his career and awaiting the release of his first mainstream LP, will now be joining rappers like TI and Lil' Wayne to name a few behind bars. So it's got me thinking is jailhouse rappers going to be the trend once again? It seems likeit. Go to jail, get some street credibility, and then come out and make a new album. Do we not remember what happened to rapper Shyne who was just recently released from a prison sentence stemming from a nightclub incident at the height of his career? When will rappers realize that once you are in the spotlight you must leave the street life for good, and when will we stop feeding into the hype from rappers who run back and forth to jail for record sales? And when will rappers realize that they are targets and when you are black money doesn't buy you out of anything? I'm not saying that these charges are racially motivated but I do remember hearing a while ago about a certain Hollywood director getting away with child molestation for many years even after he was charged. Justice is in the eye of the beholder and I see none.

Social Networking Etiquete:Relationships and the Internet

In the dawn of the social networking era, websites such as Twitter, Myspace, and Facebook have become the social platform for people everywhere to stay connected. Men, women, young, old, black, white and brown every person has utilized one of these networks either for business or pleasure. They keep us connected to friends and family member we would have previously lost touch with, keeps us in the loop about current events, and also monitors every move we make. We update our statuses, post pictures, even give people notifications about every little change in our lives. Sometimes I think that people think that people mistake their pages for their diaries. I can't count how many times I have logged onto one of these pages to find my notification box full of things like John Brown's relationship status has changed from married to single and then back again. or Plain Jane's staus is " Oh I love him so much" and then twenty minutes later it's " F**K HIM HE AIN'T S**T. I HATE HIM!" I mean come on people. I am a serious advocate of keeping personal business personal and not letting the billions of people who use thesensites to know what's going on at home. I mean think about it whatever you post on these sites anybody can see so when it comes to relationships and social networking here are the rules.
  • Don't post your relationship status as married unless you are actually married and that means with a certificate and a ring.
  • Don't post your relationship status as in a relationship if the other person is not commited to you.
  • If you and your significant other get into an argument don't post that online. Cyberspace doesn't need to know that Bobby and Suzy got into an argument. besides that leaves opportunity for other people to try to sneak in on your territory and take advantage of you vulnerability.
  • And never diss someone you just broke up with online. You never know if you will get back together, but besides that it's just tacky and shows that your are bitter about the break-up.

Chivalry and 3D Movies

I had never seen a movie in 3D before. I never understood the fun in wearing those goofy glasses and sitting in a theater while images jump off the screen. But just like I do every other rainy day in Detroit when the thought of being inside was absolutely unbearable me and my love went to the matinee. After a whole week of rainy days we decided to finally see Final Destination 3D. I'm not saying it was my last choice, but as I'd mentioned before I had never seen a movie in 3D before so ...well you know how it is when you're trying something new. In fact when we got to the ticket counter the cashier, whose lack of enthusiasm showed the repetitve nature of her job, offered us an option to see it like a regular movie or see it in 3D. I almost chose the regular one. But being the brave soul that I am, I decided to try something new. So I ordered plenty of goodies, settled down with my new "stunna shades" on and prepared for the ride. Now Final Destination movies are already scary enough. But for metal objects, glass, and body parts to be coming directly at you made the movie 100  times scarier!!!! I felt like I was in the movie and like a child I found myself reaching out to grab objects that I knew weren't there or ducking behind my boyfriend to avoid being killed by things that I knew were coming right towards my head. It was an amazing movie experience.

And while we're talking about movies...does anyone remember that movie "Dude Where's My Car?". That was one of those movies that was absolutely stupid and below my intelligence level but I loved it so much. It seemed as if it was one of those moments where I could just dumb down and laugh at things that made absolutely no sense. But everytime I watch that movie at the end I always ask myself what could I possibly find funny in that movie? Or maybe it really wasn't the humor, but instead Ashton Kutcher's beatiful boy features.

Is Chivalry Dead?
My father was a gentleman. He raised me to be not only a lady but a princess. My dad would open the door, pull out the chaair, pay the bill and all that other super star stuff that real men do. Because of that I will compare every man to my father and every man must treat me like his princess. At my age you haven't had that much experience dating but as my dad the gentleman would say, "There's bought sense and there's borrowed sense." Basically that translates to there are some things we learn the hard way through our own experinces and then there are some things that we learn through other people's experience, by listening and watching. So through both my bought and borrowed sense I have come up with this entries topic...Is Chivalry Dead?

RIP Chivalry
You Are Greatly Missed

Think back...
Ladies when is the last time your man or any man opened the door for you?
When is the last time your man opened a car door for you?
Look outside. Is your grass cut and your leaves raked?
Or besides that when is the last time you asked your man to do something (that required more than spending money) and he actually did it?

Men, when is the last time you did any of the above things for your woman?
When is the last time that you went out of your wya to make your woman comfortable?
When is the last time that you saw a woman struggling with her bags and you helped her?

If you're like the majority of people then you probably dont remember the last time. And since that is the case then yes you have proved to me that chivalry is dead. Or dying?

But what has changed throughout the years besides the date?
I have a few theories...

  • A good portion of young men these days aren't being raised with a father in the house and therefore there was no male figure to teach them how to be a gentleman.

  • Women have lowered their standards and no longer expect men to be gentleman.

  • Men no longer see women as princesses and queens.

  • Women hav e become so independent that they "don't need a man" to do the things that gentleman do.

It could be none of these reasons or a combination of them all who knows? But the fact is the days of ladies and gentleman are fading and if chivalry isn't already dead then we need to give it CPR!!!

He wishes he could father every child in the world!!!!

It seems as if every other blog post is full of news about Lil' Wayne's latest antics and I honestly try not to talk down on the boy, but today as I finally turned my computer on and logged onto the internet the first headline I saw on black voices was Lil Wayne expects third child with R&B singer Nivea. My curiosity was instantly peaked. So those that know me know that I instantly followed the link. So basically this is how the story goes...we all know that Lil' Wayne has a baby with his high school girlfriend right? Well what we may know is that he just had another baby with actress Lauren London and another unnamed college student. And not only that but now Mr. Dewayne Michael Carter Jr. is expecting another baby with R&B singer and his former boo Nivea!!!So yes count it people that is 4 yes 4 children!!!!
In my opinion( and here that is all that really matters) if Lil' Wayne doesn't stop now he's gonna be a broke down baby's daddy like ya boy FLAVA FLAV!!!!!!!!!!!! But in all seriousness though how would you feel if your baby's father made a song called I wish I could fuck every girl in the world and then is giving you proof daily that he may just be doing that? I know me personally, I used to worship Lil' Wayne but I know i would never disrespect myself by sleeping with a man who had more than one baby on the way. This behavior is not acceptable from an everage man so why should we accept this from star?

Kanye West, Lady Gaga, and more VMA news

Okay so the VMAs were last night and man was it a site to see! I'm not one of those bloggers who watches red carpet shows hoping to find something interesting to talk about not at all. I tuned into the VMAs to see what BET failed to do...a real Michael jackson tribute and a tribute it was.

When Janet Jackson performed Scream without Michael my eyes weren't the only ones that were watering.

AND speaking of teary eyes...

Of course you know I have to talk about Kanye West' antics last night. Now i am an avid Kanye fan...in fact I have often been compared to the female version of Kanye West. I love his big ego, such a big ego. But Kanye let his ego get the best of him when he crashed Taylor Swifts moon man acceptance speech. I do agree with Kanye West 100%, there is no way that Taylor Swift beat Beyonce in anything no matter what, but there is a time and place for everything Kanye. Love you hon...muah!

Check out the video courtesy of MTV

But of course Beyonce with her Diva self allowed Taylor to come on stage and finally do her acceptance speech. Poor Taylor looked like she was scared that Kanye would fly out of the sky and snatch the mike from her again! Oh Kanye there you go again shaking up things in the hip hop world again!

But honestly is anyone who has been watching tv in the past 3 or 4 years suprised by what Kanye West says anymore? I hope not...I mean he did tell the world during a Hurricane Katrina Benefit that george Bush didn't like black people! The man speaks the truth and doesn't care about what people think. And everyone knows that they love Kanye to death for it!
But Kanye wasn't the only one drawing attention that night. Lady Gaga stole the show with her performance and costumes. It was far from Kermit the Frog she looked more like a bloody statue of liberty meets a scare crow meets Lady Gaga. It was fabulous and scary at the same time. During her performance there were guys dancing with thongs on their faces, fake blood, and wheelchairs which I didn't understand but I loved it!!! Also she dedicated her award to God and the gays.
Side note- I finally found out how to pronounce 30h!3
But the host was weird as heck and definetley high off something!
And did anyone notice that when the lead singer from Greenday (who gave the best performance ever!!!!) asked girls to get on the stge the first one only had on a tshirt?
And finally Pink did her thing on the trapeze...I was so scared for her though. Serious girl power chica!!!!

The Orphan
When I saw the previews to this movie I thought it would be your typical psychotic child thriller. However I was still intrigued. So I went to see it and I was blown away. The story is about an evil little girl. She isn’t possesed with any demonic spirits, but she definetely has the devil in her. It was end that made my jaw drop. But since I’m not one to spoil the movie I just highly suggest that you see this movie and I’ll leave it that.

When have we has a president that could that could diffuse such a staticky situation Of course we have all heard about the situation with Professor Henry Louis Gates and the cop. Well if we continued to follow the story we would know that President Barack Obama kept his promise to have the two over for beers at the White House. They sat down and talked like two men…it was a sight to see.

In My Own Words

Appearances

Peopla already have a bad image of rapper Lil’ Wayne. The critics have much to say, he’s a bad influence , his lyrics are harsh etc etc…I just have to mention that I have been a die hard Lil’ Wayne fan for the past 9 or 10 years. But he even had my eyebrow raised during his BET award show performance with Young Drake last month.

The two performed “I Wish I Could Fuck Every Girl In the World” accompanied by some girls…and when I say girls I do mean girls. The girls were the OMG girls who were all under 15. I don’t think Lil’ Wayne and the BET producers thought how it would look to publicly expose young ladies to such harsh lyrics. Rappers need to start focusing more on their outward appearances than they have been. I mean God forbid Lil’ Wayne would ever have to fight a custody battle because that video would be all they would need to blow his defense out of the water.

Some News
The Anti-Obama crew was back at it with the whole fake birth certificate ordeal. According to the people who coordinated this hoax the birth certificate is authentic and the 48 year old president was born in Kenya. Some people don’t know when to stop.

The coroner has officially ruled Michael Jackson’s death as a homicide!!!!!!

Another beef in the music industry as Eminem goes head to head with Mariah Carey and her hubby Nick Cannon. Eminem, who may have been targeted by Carey in the video for her song Obsessed, came back with a song warning Mariah to back off because he has enough “dirt to bury her”.

Anybody can relate to this song. Trey Song's soulful voice mixed with Drake's young and fresh lyrics paint visions of success in your mind.

Wrong Turn
I saw the sequel to this movie before I saw part one and it's true what they say, the beginning is always better than the sequel. Although there were your typical dumb scary movie moments, there was enough originality to keep my interest.

Drag You To Hell
Here's another one of my favorite's that is still out in theater. I don't want to give to much information, but the plot of this movie was very unique and the ending is full of suprises. I believe the makers of this film were the same ones who made Evil Dead.

Barack Obama Call and end to corrupiton in Africa

In My Own Words

Not Allowed To Sign
I work at a cellphone store. And as many of us knows if you go into most cellphone stores where I'm from they are owned and operated by people of Middle Eastern descent. I'm not saying that people of Middle Eastern descent only own cell phone stores but it is a common occurence especially within the company that I work for. I'm not the only person who thnks that. I have had many African American customers ask how I got this job because "you know 'they' don't hire 'us' ". I would often just return those comments with a blank stare as if I were unsure of who "they" and "us " were. I knew I had a job that most black people in my area didn't have, I also knew that I deserved it. I worked hard and had a lot more experience than a lot of people who were hired into the company based on nationality or family alliances rather than merit. So no, I usually didn't get offended when I heard things like this.
That was until one morning. There was a girl working with me that was fairly new, she had only been with the company for a few days, I had been there for about 6 months. we had just been open for a few minutes we were supposed to be cleaning the store but the truth is that some of my coworkers were very loazy and knew that I would be blamed of the store was unclean like I always did. I'm not complaining that's just the way things were. I always wondered if this was another reflection of how people felt about black people. Well in the midst of my morning cleaning routine we got a UPS shipment buit it wasn't our regular UPS guy. Whe he walked in I smiled and greeted him with a smile"Good morning!". Had it been our regular UPS guy he would have responded with the same enthusiasm. If he was our regular UPS guy he would have know that I was the one who signed for the packages. Heck if he hadn't been such a prick he woulld have made things a million times easier for himself and let the person closest to him sign for it. yes that's how it would have been in a perfect world. But no this guy was an asshole. Had he not been so busy trying to ignore me he would have seen me reaching for his signature pad. But instead of making things easier for the both of us he walked all the way to the back of the store. to my coworker who so happened to be Jordanian. i followed him thinking that maybe he just wanted to set the packages on the counter. When he extended his little machine to my coworker my heart alost dropped. " You could have bought it to me" I said. He looked behind him as though he was suprised to see that there was someone else in the store. "I'll remember that next time" he responded. My blood began to boil, though I kept my composure. i refused to decrease myself to that level.
But some people like to kick you when your down On his way out, he said" No offense just some people aren't allowed to sign for stuff, you know what I mean right?". Thank God he walked out the door in time because I had just about had enough. Not only was he being rascist but he had the nerve to explain his actions by saying that me as a black woman was not qualifyed to sign for a package. My queation is this do you think that it was race that made him believe that she was more qualified to sign for a packeage than me. What do you think?

I was singing this song non-stop last week, so it isn’t just because Michael has died that I added this. This song seems like the classy version of the Halle Berry song by Hurricane Chris.

Movies
Underworld 3- I remember when I went to the theatre to see this movie. The anticipation while I waited for the beginning credits to roll is comparable to the anticipation that I felt when I knew that it was next to come for my Netflix subscription. I couldn’t keep my eyes off of it, which is good for a person that can hardly stay awake during the beginning credits.

Michael Jackson

In My Own Words
As much as I try not to be like everyone else the tragedy that has occurred calls for me to follow the crowd and talk about the death of beloved international pop star Michael Jackson.
When I first heard the news I’ll admit I almost cried. In fact I would have cried had I not been in the cell phone store where I work with a line of customers and a host of co-workers around. I FELT LIKE A FAMILY MEMBER HAD DIED. I was heartbroken, but the thing about it was that many people understood and felt my sorrow. Most of us were raised on Michael Jackson. We’ve all had a bad day and listened to Mike and felt a smile creeping across our faces.
Some of my earliest memories are of Michael Jackson. The first time I remembered being scared was while watching Thriller. While in high school me and my aunt would listen to Michael Jackson while I stayed with her in Ohio during the summer. When people heard Michael Jackson people put their troubles behind them. There were no classes, no sexes, no races. He taught us that it didn’t matter if we were black or white.
And then when I grew one of my boyfriends simply gave me “Butterflies” while another a few years down the line “Rocked my World”. Michael Jackson in many ways became part of our world and in many ways he will be truly missed.

Watching For The Signs

Last week at Henry Ford Community College a tragedy occured. On Friday April 10, 2009, 20 year old Asia McGowen was murdered in a classroom by alleged ex-boyfriend Anthony Powell, who in turn killed himself. i don't want to do too much speculation about this incident, but what I want to say to everyone is that you have to watch out for the signs. Unfortunately there are some mentally disturbed people out here and no matter how many petitions I circulate we can not make them wear t-shirts that say "Beware for crazy" but there are many other ways that you can tell if a person has mental issues that could in turn be dangerous for you. If a person tells you that they wont feel complete without you or that they can't live without you...ding ding ding! If they tell you that you are the best thing that has ever happened to them...caution! These are just a few of the warning signs. Also we have to be careful of how people feel and their emotions.
Also when we are on college campuses we need to be aware of the safety precautions. I used to tell my fiance almost every morning how unsafe I thought the campus was because of lack of proper security. I think he felt just the same way as the school did, because it was a community college nothing like that would ever happen and that only happens at major university's. Well now what?!
With that said...R.I.P Asia you will be remembered

Never Judge A Book By It's Cover

A few weeks ago if Susan Boyle had told someone that she was one of the world's greatest singers, she would have been laughed out of every room without anyone taking a chance to hear what she had to say. Hell even as she was on stage in Britian for the very first time her daughter hid her face in shame possibly partialy because she thought her mother would embarass her. Nobody took her seriously and when it played on the news the next morning. We all thought that it would be like those oh so embarassing and hilarious clips like the ones we see every new season of American Idol. We didn't expect that this woman who reminds me of what Mrs. Butterworth or Betty Crocker would look like to be able to capture the audiences attention like she did. And that is how she left the crowd speechless. Within moments she had a crowd that was prepared to laugh her off the stage was awestruck and speechless because one of the world's greatest vocalist came in such an unusual package.
There is one valuable lesson to this story. Never judge a book by its cover. Just because someone doesn't fit the description, don't write it them off as a reject. And likewise, just because you feel like you may not fit the description of what the media thinks something should look like, doesn't mean that you should disqualify yourself. Hey ask Mr. Obama about that one!
